Tired Of Your Old Furniture: How To Get A New Look Without New Furniture

by Jason Mason

If you don't like the look of your old furniture, but you're on a tight budget, don't give up. There are quite a few ways you can breathe new life into your old furniture. With some imagination, and determination, you can redecorate your home using your original furniture. Not sure how to do it? Here are four creative ideas to get you started.

Reupholster

If you've got upholstered furniture that's seen better days – maybe the print is outdated, or just worn out – you can change the look by adding some new upholstery. There are many companies that will come to your home and reupholster your old furniture, for a lot less than what it would cost to purchase brand new furniture for your home. If you'd like to try a do-it-yourself project, consider taking an upholstering class at your local community college. You'll learn how to do something that will come in handy over and over again. Reupholstering will allow you to get years of additional use of your old furniture. This is particularly useful when the frame and padding are still in good condition on your furniture. Refinish

If you've got old wood furniture that's lost its luster, don't send it to the dumpster. Refinish it instead. You can sand down the old finish and reapply a fresh coat of stain that will have your old wood furniture looking brand new again. If you'd prefer to give it a whole new look, apply a fresh coat of paint instead. When you're tired of the look, sand it down to the bare wood, and start over again.

Redesign

If you've got dressers and other furniture that's still in good condition, but it needs an updated look, ditch the old hardware. Changing the outdated hardware for something that goes with your new décor will allow you to continue using your furniture, while still giving it a fresh new look. You can pick up new drawer pulls and knobs at your local hardware store.

Re-purpose

If you've got furniture that just doesn't suit its purpose anymore, don't toss it. Re-purpose it instead. There are a lot of creative things you can do with old pieces of furniture. For instance, that old dresser that you no longer need can be put on the porch, and turned into a container garden. Before you toss out your old furniture, take a step back and see what else you can use it for.
