Trying to Downsize to a Smaller Place? Space-Saving Ideas for You

by Jason Mason

If you are thinking about downsizing to a smaller home, you might be overwhelmed with the prospect. After all, downsizing usually means getting rid of a lot of your possessions and stuff. This can be a difficult process, but ultimately rewarding when you get to your new home. Whether you are downsizing because of costs or because you are adopting a minimalist lifestyle (or any other reason), you may be looking for space-saving ideas to help you make the most out of your new, smaller home. Get to know a few space-saving ideas for your new, smaller home when you are downsizing. Then, you can give these ideas a try when you move into your new home.

Use Murphy Beds in as Many Rooms as Possible

If you are moving into a smaller home, it can sometimes feel like there is no space to walk around in the bedrooms. Beds take up a lot of real estate in the rooms they occupy. They make it difficult to use the space for anything other than sleeping. However, if you install wall beds, also known as murphy beds, in your bedrooms, you will be able to save a ton of space and be able to use the rooms for other purposes during the day. Essentially, these beds fold up into the wall or a cabinet attached to the wall when not in use.

You do not have to unmake your bed and redo the sheets every day or anything like that, simply fold the sheets and blankets up into the wall with the frame and mattress. Then, you can use your bedroom for whatever you need. Whether that's an office to work from home, a playroom for the kids, a filming space if you do YouTube or other videos. The possibilities are endless.

And then at night when you are ready to sleep, you unfold the bed from the wall and it's ready to go. Easy, simple, and it saves a ton of space.

Install Shelving and Pull-Out Cabinets Under the Stairs

If your new smaller home has stairs in it, you have an opportunity to save space there as well. Say your kitchen is small or you just don't have enough storage for items you will need at some point. Then, you can create storage under the stairs.

With the help of a carpenter (or even on your own if you have those skills), you can install shelving and/or pull-out cabinets under the stairs. Pull-out cabinets are one of the best ideas because your staircase will look like a normal staircase, but you will be able to pull a drawer out and find a number of items you may need, from blankets for couches to extra kitchen gadgets, and everything in between.

Now that you know a few ways you can save space in a new smaller house, you can be sure to invest in Murphy beds right away.
