3 Tips For Choosing Home Wall Decor That Complements New Furniture

by Jason Mason

Updating furniture is a great way to make your space feel brand new. By adding a new sofa, loveseat, table, or dresser, you can make your home more beautiful and functional. However, the look won't be complete until you hang up a few things on the wall. Here are three tips for choosing home wall decor that complements your new furniture pieces.

1. Maintain a Streamlined Decor Scheme

Trends gain popularity and taper off all the time when it comes to furniture. For instance, farmhouse and industrial-styled pieces were popular a few years ago, which meant you could find furniture and wall art that looked great together then but may struggle to do the same now.

When you shop for wall decor, make sure it meshes with the design genre of the furniture you have. For instance, if you picked wooden furniture with rattan accents and pinstriped cushions, consider a beachy theme for your wall decor. On the other hand, if your furniture is styled after mid-century modern pieces, consider a simple wall clock in the same vein.

2. Take Color Cues

Be mindful of the colors of your furniture. Look underneath the furniture for small fabric swatches sewn onto the upholstery for convenient matching. Bring the swatch with you when you shop for different items to hang on the wall, so things like picture frames, art, and hung sculptures would look great next to your new furniture. Remember that neutrals like black and white will go with most furniture styles.

3. Consider Size and Scale

After you have your new furniture installed, consider the size of the pieces, and the amount of space above the furniture where you would want to decorate. To keep the decorated wall from looking too bare, try to select hung objects that encompass a large area behind the sofa. Consider a collage wall for strangely shaped walls. Hang pictures, wall sculptures, mirrors, and even wall plants next to each other above the sofa to create an interesting decor point in your room.

If you have recently updated your furniture, don't be shy about hanging things up on the wall. If you are renting an apartment, check with your landlord to see how they feel about small nail holes, or consider using adhesive hooks or strips. Since you may need to move items on the wall around slightly before their final placement, consider using adhesive strips anyway at first to test different hanging orientations.
