Reasons To Buy A Sofa With Low Arms

by Jason Mason

Your primary focus when you shop for a new sofa at a local furniture store might be to find a piece of furniture that matches the other furniture and decor in the room you'll be placing it in, but there are other things to think about. You should also look at different sofas to take note of their overall designs. One thing to notice is the arms of each sofa. In some models, the arms will be high. In other models, they'll be low. There are a lot of reasons why a sofa with low arms can be a good choice, including these points.

It's Better For Sleeping

While you might be planning to spend a lot of time sitting on your new sofa to watch TV and converse with family members, this piece of furniture can also be a good choice for napping. If you enjoy stretching out and having a short nap on occasion, it's important to choose the right sofa for this activity. You'll generally find that a sofa that has low arms is a better design for napping than a sofa with high arms. The low-armed design will allow you to rest your head on either arm in comfort. Conversely, it would likely be uncomfortable to rest your head on a high arm with your body lying on the sofa.

It Can Feel More Open

Sofas that have high arms can sometimes seem a little cramped, which may not be a look that suits you. This can especially be a concern if you're looking for a sofa that is on the smaller side, as it may look particularly cramped. You generally want the pieces of furniture in your home to have an open and inviting look, especially if you often entertain guests. Low arms on a sofa can contribute to this desired look.

It May Be More Comfortable

You should always sit on sofas that you're thinking about buying. While you might be focused on the feel of the cushions beneath and behind you, position your body at either end of the sofa and place your arm on the sofa's arm. If the sofa's arm is high, you may find that you need to hold your arm at an awkward angle. The eventual result of sitting this way could be shoulder discomfort. On a sofa with a low arm, however, you may find that you can rest your arm in more of a natural position that is comfortable and conducive to long-term sitting.
