3 Tips for Collecting Vintage Movie Props

by Jason Mason

Movies have the power to transport viewers to another time and place. Many people have such a strong emotional response to movies that they want to own a piece of these productions for themselves.

Movie props are often made available for sale to the public. If you are looking to start a collection of vintage movie props, there are some critical tips to keep in mind as you evaluate potential pieces to add to your collection.

1. Consider Future Maintenance Needs

Movie props usually aren't designed to last forever. Since the props will be used for the film and not for a long period of time, many of them are made from delicate or easily damaged materials.

You should always consider the future maintenance needs of an item before adding it to your collection. You don't want to spend a lot of money on a movie prop that will require ongoing maintenance to remain intact.

Beginner collectors should look for items that are easy to display and care for.

2. Look for Non-Hero Props

In the world of vintage movie props, there are two distinct classifications: hero props and non-hero props.

A hero prop is anything that was used or worn by the main actors in a film. Non-hero props are items used and worn by extras.

It is much easier to locate an authentic non-hero prop in good condition. New collectors can become discouraged when searching for hero props, and many hero props come with price tags that exclude casual collectors.

A good non-hero prop still gives you ownership of a piece of vintage movie history, but you won't have to break the bank to add the prop to your collection.

3. Screen Match Before Buying

It's thrilling to watch your favorite vintage movie and see a prop that you own being displayed on the screen. Unfortunately, many new collectors don't take the time to screen match items before adding them to their collection.

Be sure that you verify a prop actually appeared on screen during a movie before you complete your purchase. This will prevent you from investing in props that were made for a movie but never used, or replica items that differ in their design from the original on-screen prop.

Collecting vintage movie props is exciting. By thinking about maintenance needs, focusing on non-hero props, and screen matching everything, you can easily build a prop collection that you will be proud to display.
