Teen Bedroom Furniture 101: Choosing A Bed

by Jason Mason

As your kids grow up, they reach a point where the childish bedroom decor and smaller furniture designs are just not a good fit anymore. If you have a pre-teen or teenager in the house, you may have found them to be frustrated with the bedroom they have grown up in. That's when it's time to start looking at new bedroom furniture. When you're shopping for bedroom furniture for a pre-teen or teenager, there are a few things that you should think about. Here are a few of the best bed design options for teens.

Added Storage

The older your children get, the more things they acquire. Those approaching or in their teen years are often looking for more ways to keep those things organized and out of the way. If you're in the market for a new bed for your teen anyway, you can contribute to this desire for better organization by choosing a bed design that gives them added storage.

For example, some beds come with built-in cabinets and shelves in the headboard, which make for great storage for books, small items, and more. Additionally, you can choose a bed design with under-bed drawers and storage compartments as well. Especially if you're upgrading your child to a larger bed, such as a queen-sized model, this could give you a lot of extra storage space.

More Floor Space

If your child's room is on the smaller side, you may be considering furniture that optimizes that limited floor space. One thing that you can do is choose an elevated bed design, like a loft bed, that provides free space underneath the bed. You can then place a desk and bookshelves under the bed with a ladder to reach the bed like the top bunk of a bunk bed would have.

This can give your child a lot more functionality in their bedroom, creating a dedicated study space for those upcoming high school and early college years while still giving them a large enough bed to be comfortable.

Multiple Uses

Another thing to consider when you're shopping for a new bed for your teenager is the possibility of a multi-use bed investment. Even if it means having to custom-order the bed, consider the benefits of buying your teen a daybed instead of a traditional-style bed. Daybeds are a great solution for the teen who likes to hang out in their room and with their friends. They can not only use the bed for sleeping at night, but they also can use it as a couch during the day.

These are some of the most popular options for pre-teen and teen bedroom designs. Consider the benefits of each of them and talk with your local furniture store to get the right bed for your child's room.
